DMU were in excellent company yesterday with a large crowd on the sidelines including the rest of the rugby club. Also present was Dominic Shellard, De Montfort’s Vice Chancellor and Matt Hampson, Former England under21 and Leicester Tigers prop and founder of the Matt Hampson Foundation.
The game did not get off to a good start for DMU, they found themselves 6-0 down within the first 15 minutes. By the time 30 minutes had passed they started to claw back after a penalty kick was given and converted by Henry Clement. Another penalty kick only a few minutes later lead DMU to draw level at 6-6. Half time came at a very good point for DMU just after Northampton’s number 5 was sent to the bin, time to regroup and push on whilst at an advantage.
Team talk at half time worked wonders, DMU came out fighting with strong scrums and were soon rewarded with their first Try of the game from Henry Clement.
In the last quarter of the game, the Demons took a huge lead with two try’s in quick succession to make it 25-6. First by Alex Parker with the conversion by Clement and the second an incredible interception by Ed Grosvenor on the half way line and a fantastic sprint to the try line. The whole of the DMU following sprinted up the pitch to celebrate.
In the last few minutes, Northampton tried to make a comeback with a try but there was not enough time, the Demons took the title with the final score being 25-11.
All the boys were in full celebration after the game, which was great to see the whole club together supporting each other. The Vice Chancellor was extremely proud and could not wait to go and congratulate the boys.
“I could not be prouder of our Men’s Rugby team, who have truly made history by being the first DMU club ever to lift a BUCS cup. They join Netball, Men’s Tennis and Women’s Hockey as BUCS winners, with perhaps more to come in this year of unprecedented sporting glory for DMU.”
