‘Why Him?’ hasn’t exactly achieved critical acclaim since it’s release on the 26th December with a 38 metascore standing and a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie definitely has its good and bad points:

The movie begins straight away with sexual content so you know what you’re getting from the outset as Stephanie’s (Zoey Deutch) family take their first glimpse of her secret, millionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The plot from there onwards is basically wacky Laird’s journey to getting accepted by Stephanie’s family.

Personally, I really enjoyed this movie. It’s a great light-hearted comedy that’s sure to cheer anyone up, if you don’t mind a little bit of adult humour. It included a solid cast with Bryan Cranston, Zoey Deutch and James Franco. The classic father vs. fiancé situation is admittedly not an original idea but it worked, to some extent. One of the main reasons I think I enjoyed watching this movie so much was the characters, the cast did a splendid job of creating loveable and somewhat relatable characters that the audience grew to love as the movie played on.

There were a few points within the movie where it seemed unrealistic and that’s where the silliness comes in. Usually, I wouldn’t like that kind of thing which is why I grew out of ‘children’s’ TV so early but I surprised myself because I didn’t really mind it, even if I did cringe a couple times at a few scenes that felt as if they were trying too hard to get laughs. Comedy that comes natural is always the best comedy. Overall, if you’re in the mood for a good laugh, this is the movie to see.

3/5 stars!
