Leicester boasts one of the most multi-cultural societies in Britain, providing a fantastic array of food options throughout the city. From some of the best Asian cuisines in the country, to a wealth of hideaway food gems that cater fresh, interesting and unusual dishes, to some of the tastiest burger joints around- there’s a foodie haunt to suit every taste bud.

taps

Taps

Situated in one of the oldest and quaintest buildings in the city, and just a short walk from De Montfort campus, this bar and restaurant is perfect for the beer connoisseur and the lover of posh, homely British food. It boasts a range of lovingly made cocktails, international beers and food that transforms the classic into something truly special. The bar menu offers some fantastic burgers with a load of interesting topping options from pulled pork, braised chilli beef and tandoori paneer to just name a few. For special occasions, Taps also offers a 2 course menu at the reasonable price of £19.50. I was there myself not long ago, and was blown away by the high-class presentation, the delicious food, and the star service from the staff.

istanbul

Istanbul

Currently undergone a massive extension is my favourite Turkish restaurant in town. Based on Narborough Road, a 10 minute walk from campus, this food place is perfect for the meat-lovers. It’s always one of the most popular restaurants on the street- and for a good reason. Istanbul provides a wealth of authentic Turkish dishes from stuffed vine leaves, to freshly grilled halloumi, homemade falafels, and gorgeous calamari. For main course visitors can enjoy chicken, lamb, fish and vegetables all grilled on their barbeques in front of you. For such a low price the portions are ridiculously generous- I’m yet to finish an entire meal from this place!

little tokyo

Little Tokyo

With great Japanese food being a rarity in Leicester, Little Tokyo on Braunstone Gate was a welcomed treat. This place boasts a range of authentic and delicious Japanese food, from Ramen and Udon soups, Donburi rice bowl dishes, Japanese curries, and a very reasonably priced range of sushi. The large menu means you are always spoilt for choice, the food is always beautifully presented and the staff are always on hand to offer suggestions for those a little unknown to Japanese cuisine. If you want to try something new, interesting, and healthy this should be the next restaurant on your list.

Mrs Bridges Tearooms

Quaint, old-fashioned, stylish and homely- this café has all the qualities desired in a delicious place to eat on a Sunday afternoon (or any afternoon for that matter!) Don’t be put off by the tearoom title- it’s not all crumbly scones and weak tea. This café has some of the best grub in Leicester! Customers can enjoy a an array of delicious pasta and risotto dishes, hot pork and chicken sandwiches in homemade bread, hand-cut chunky chips (with the option of a sprinkling of parmesan and garlic) and a delicious range of homemade desserts like sticky toffee pudding, Bakewell tart, warm gooey brownie, or cute French macaroons. There not long ago, I was impressed that such fantastic food could come out of such a small kitchen- it will blow you away too, honest!

Natterjacks

Another food joint based on Braunstone Gate, this buzzing bar and restaurant is the perfect place to grab some food that will instantly make life feel better. With go-big-or-go-home burgers, juicy steaks, Texan BBQ pork ribs, sizzling fajitas, cheesy nachos and (my favourite) curly fries- this place is the perfect pig-out when you need a treat. It has some of the best ice cream sundaes, like banoffee and honeycomb, or rocky road flavour, and the tastiest pancakes around. What’s more you can slurp on some unique and interesting cocktails while stuffing your face- sounds like a perfect Friday night to me!
